Turkey infrastructure projects cause widespread traffic disruptions
Extensive infrastructure maintenance and construction projects are causing widespread traffic and transit disruptions across Turkey.
On major highways, the General Directorate of Highways (KGM) reports various closures and controlled passages. Key areas include the TEM Highway near the Hasdal Viaduct, the Aydın-Denizli Highway, and the Artvin-Erzurum road. In Bolu, the Anadolu Highway toward Istanbul is facing closures for superstructure repairs, with traffic being diverted to the Ankara direction. Other affected routes include the Ankara Ring Road, Afyonkarahisar-Konya road, and several regional roads in Balıkesir and Bursa.
In urban centers, significant transit updates are underway. In Ankara, the metro line between OSTİM and Batıkent is undergoing improvements, leading to speed restrictions and potential delays through early September. In Kahramanmaraş, the Tevfik Kadıoğlu Junction has undergone a major redesign to reduce waiting times from 91 to 22 seconds. Meanwhile, large-scale road renewal projects are being executed in İzmir, with 2 billion TL invested in asphalt works, and in Bursa, where 22 kilometers of road are being resurfaced across five districts.
In Istanbul, construction continues on the 45-kilometer Nakkaş-Başakşehir section of the Northern Marmara Highway, aimed at reducing traffic load on the TEM Highway and around major hospitals.
