Beyoğlu market vendor arrested after fruit‑selection dispute injures woman
On 27 July, a dispute over fruit and vegetable selection erupted in the Kulaksız neighbourhood market of Beyoğlu, Istanbul. Vendor Selahattin Ş. (55) warned customer Nurcihan Y. (50) not to damage the produce, saying “We sell these, we make bread from them.” The argument escalated, and Selahattin Ş. threw an object at Nurcihan Y.'s head, causing bleeding but no life‑threatening injury. She was taken to hospital for treatment. Police detained Selahattin Ş., who was later charged with intentional injury and sentenced to custody by a court. The investigation remains ongoing.
The incident highlights tensions between market sellers and shoppers over product handling and has prompted calls for better dispute‑resolution measures in local markets.
