Turkish municipalities expand financial aid for retirees

Municipalities in Turkey are expanding social support programs for retirees to combat rising living costs. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) has announced a significant assistance package, including monthly rent support and one-time cash bonuses for eligible low-income retirees living within Istanbul. İBB has also outlined a long-term social support vision for 2027, involving substantial funding for various demographics.

In Tekirdağ, the Metropolitan Municipality has extended its 'Market Support' program. Following the completion of an initial 14,000 TL annual payment cycle in July, the municipality will continue providing monthly payments of 1,750 TL to eligible retirees until the end of the year. This initiative is part of a broader social service strategy that includes food aid and personal care services for the elderly and disabled.

On a national level, social security experts are advising citizens on the timing of retirement applications and debt payments. Expert Murat Bal noted that delaying social security debt payments (such as for military or maternity service) until 2027 could result in costs increasing by approximately 30% due to minimum wage adjustments. Additionally, while the difference in monthly pension rates between 2026 and 2027 is expected to be small (around 2-3%), retirees in 2027 may benefit from higher severance pay ceilings.
