Istanbul police seize 126 illegal sacrificial animals, fine drivers 626,000 lira
Istanbul Police Traffic Inspection units set up a checkpoint on the TEM highway at Kavacık and, between 18 May and 26 May 2026, stopped a series of trucks transporting animals without proper documentation. Inspectors discovered 100 small‑ruminant and 26 large‑ruminant animals intended for the upcoming Kurban Bayramı, seized the livestock and handed them to the provincial Agriculture and Forestry Directorate.
The drivers were charged under Law No. 5996 on veterinary services, plant health, food and feed, and each received an administrative fine totaling 626 189 Turkish lira. Authorities said the operation aimed to protect public health and curb illegal trade ahead of the religious holiday.
