Istanbul reports increase in scorpion sightings in residential areas

Residents in Istanbul are reporting an increase in scorpion sightings within residential areas, particularly in districts with significant elevation changes such as Üsküdar and Kağıthane. Experts suggest that rising temperatures and high humidity levels in the Marmara region have contributed to the increased activity of these arachnids.

Entomologist Prof. Dr. Zeynel Arslan Gündoğdu noted that while scorpions are part of the local ecosystem and serve as natural predators for harmful insects, residents should remain cautious. He advised against killing them to maintain ecological balance but emphasized the importance of using natural methods to protect homes.

Prof. Dr. Ahmet Aydın from Yeditepe University explained that scorpions thrive in humid environments, grassy areas, and construction debris. He warned that while there are thousands of species globally, approximately 70 can cause serious poisoning in humans, including some species found in Turkey.

Regarding medical concerns, Dr. Aydın stated that the severity of a sting often depends on the scorpion's size and the amount of venom injected. Common symptoms include pain, redness, and swelling at the site of the sting. He advised that anyone experiencing a sting should seek medical attention at a health facility.
