Istanbul requires 600 km of additional metro lines
Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu has announced significant updates regarding transportation infrastructure in Istanbul and the Halkali-Kapikule High Speed Train project. Uraloğlu stated that Istanbul requires a total of 1,000 kilometers of metro lines. While the current rail network is approximately 380 kilometers, it is expected to reach 400 kilometers with ongoing projects, leaving a need for an additional 600 kilometers.
Regarding specific projects, the Sariyer-Kilyos Tunnel is targeted for completion and service by the end of the year. For the Halkali-Kapikule High Speed Train line, the Cerkezkoy-Kapikule section is scheduled to open next month, with the Halkali-Cerkezkoy section expected to be operational next year.
The Minister also noted that the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has taken responsibility for the Umraniye-Beykoz metro line and will complete the metro line running through Bosna Bulvari, Camlica Mosque, and Umraniye Sports Village. While urban rail systems are primarily the responsibility of local municipalities, the Ministry remains authoritative in the approval and feasibility processes of these projects.
