Istanbul residents report increased scorpion sightings in urban areas
Residents in Istanbul, particularly in the Üsküdar and Kağıthane districts, have reported an increase in scorpion sightings within homes and buildings. Following a recent surge in large grasshopper populations in the Marmara Region, the appearance of scorpions in urban areas—including high-rise apartments—has caused local concern.
Experts attribute this trend to high humidity levels and summer temperatures, which encourage scorpion populations to expand. Scorpions are drawn to damp, dark areas, construction debris, and cracks in buildings. While most species found in the city are relatively small, experts note that certain species, such as Euscorpius italicus, are common in urban environments.
Entomologist Prof. Dr. Zeynel Arslan Gündoğdu advises against killing the creatures, noting their ecological role in controlling insect populations. Instead, he suggests safely relocating them using a container and paper. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Aydın warns that while many stings result in local pain or swelling, large scorpions can cause systemic symptoms like rapid breathing or heart palpitations, necessitating immediate medical attention.
To deter scorpions, experts recommend using natural repellents like peppermint oil near doorsteps and damp corners.
