Student and boyfriend jailed after 606 rounds seized at Şişli mall
On 6 July, police in Istanbul’s Şişli district stopped a 24‑year‑old university student, Beyza A., who attempted to bring a magazine and 25 live rounds into a shopping centre. The ammunition was detected by an X‑ray scanner; she left the premises but was later identified from security footage and apprehended in a nearby nightclub.
Beyza A. said the ammunition had been found while cleaning a rented flat for her 47‑year‑old boyfriend, Erol G., who then asked her to deliver it to the mall. Following her arrest, investigators detained Erol G. and searched seven locations linked to him, seizing a further 564 rounds from a business in Sarıyer and 17 rounds from his father’s house, bringing the total to 606 rounds. Both suspects were charged with violating Turkey’s Firearms Law and were remanded in custody.
No injuries were reported. The case highlights security procedures at public venues and the authorities’ response to illegal firearms possession.
