Istanbul hospital removes bone fragment from patient's lung
A 41-year-old man in Istanbul, Mehmet Polat, underwent a successful surgery to remove a piece of bone from his lung. Polat had sought medical attention at Şişli Hamidiye Etfal Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi after experiencing persistent coughing, fatigue, and rapid weight loss of approximately 7 kilograms in two weeks.
Initial medical examinations and radiological imaging identified a suspicious mass in his right lung, leading to concerns of cancer. After bronchoscopy failed to provide a definitive diagnosis, a medical council recommended Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS). During the operation on July 7, rapid pathology revealed that the mass was not cancerous but was actually a half-centimeter piece of bone that had entered his airway and caused reactive tissue growth.
Thoracic surgeon Associate Professor Onur Derdiyok performed the procedure, which involved removing the bone and the surrounding tissue. Derdiyok noted that while foreign body-related sleeve surgeries are rare, early diagnosis prevented the need for more extensive lung removal. Polat joked about the discovery, stating, “I am someone who loves bone, so it didn't surprise me much.”
