Istanbul uses AI and satellite technology to combat forest fires
The Istanbul Forest Regional Directorate is utilizing artificial intelligence and advanced technology through its Fire Coordination Center to combat forest fires. The center operates 24/7 with 8 expert staff members who monitor the landscape using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), high-resolution cameras, and 15 observation towers. The monitoring network is further supported by 37 observation cameras and 9 mobile cameras.
To ensure rapid response, the directorate maintains a fleet of 28 water tenders and 49 first response teams, with 296 specialized personnel active in the field. The center uses AI-driven modeling to analyze fire risks and predict the potential direction of fires upon detection.
Separately, a new platform named Ottosi has been introduced to enhance early detection. Developed to minimize the damage caused by forest fires, Ottosi integrates satellite technology, AI, and sensors. While many satellite-based systems report fires within one to three hours, the Ottosi platform claims to process satellite data and alert users within 9 to 15 minutes. The system is available for use by individuals, municipalities, and corporations to monitor specific regions 24/7.
