Istanbul water management: Industrial disputes and sustainability efforts
In Istanbul, a legal and environmental dispute has emerged regarding a proposed Biotechnology Organized Industrial Zone (OSB) in the Ömerli water basin. The Chamber of Environmental Engineers (ÇMO) argues that the project, planned for a 250-hectare area in Tepeören, threatens the Ömerli basin, which provides approximately 50 percent of Istanbul's drinking water. Critics note that the project's planned production of antibiotics, hormones, and vaccines violates regulations prohibiting chemical synthesis and storage in long-distance protection zones. Courts have already issued stay of execution and annulment decisions regarding the project.
Separately, Istanbul Airport (İGA) has announced plans to eliminate its dependence on the municipal water network by the second half of 2027. By implementing a new reverse osmosis plant to supplement its existing advanced biological treatment facility, the airport aims to meet all its water needs through recycling. Currently, the airport meets 42 percent of its water consumption through reclaimed sources. This follows the airport's existing initiative to power its entire electricity demand via a 240 MW solar energy plant.
