Istiqlal Party delegates Nizar Baraka to lead government negotiations

The Istiqlal Party held an extraordinary session of its National Council in Salé on October 3, 2026, to determine its position regarding the formation of the upcoming Moroccan government. The Council officially delegated Secretary-General Nizar Baraka to manage negotiations for the party's potential participation in the new government.

Nizar Baraka reported that the party secured 65 parliamentary seats with approximately 1.5 million votes, representing 15.34% of the expressed votes. He emphasized that any participation in the government is strictly conditional upon the inclusion of the party's electoral program commitments in the official government platform. These priorities include protecting purchasing power, combating corruption, and enhancing public services in health and education.

During the session, Baraka also noted that the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) has reportedly rejected an alliance with the National Rally of Independents (RNI). While some party members, such as Mohamed Bensassi, advocated for joining the opposition due to concerns over election integrity and ideological differences, the official party stance remains focused on negotiating a role that aligns with its social and political mandates.
