Istiqlal Party faces internal crisis amid election endorsement disputes

The Istiqlal Party in Morocco is facing internal instability as the 2026 legislative elections approach. Disputes regarding electoral endorsements and the distribution of candidacy positions have triggered a wave of resignations among party leaders and elected officials.

Member of Parliament Abderrahim Bouaida officially resigned from the party, citing his failure to secure an endorsement for the upcoming elections. Bouaida questioned the criteria used for granting endorsements, noting that another candidate was chosen for his district despite previous concerns regarding that individual's legal status. He described his decision as final, stating the disagreement extends beyond mere candidacy to a deeper conflict regarding political practice.

This resignation follows other departures from the party's structures, including Mohammed Rabie El Khanchouf, a member of the National Council and deputy inspector for the Fahs Anjra province.
