Istiqlal Party to decide on Moroccan government participation
Following the September 23, 2026, legislative elections in Morocco, the Istiqlal Party is deliberating its role in the upcoming government. The party's executive committee, led by Secretary General Nizar Baraka, met on September 28 to analyze the results. The party reported finishing second in total votes and third in seats, securing 65 seats in the 395-seat Chamber of Representatives.
While the Istiqlal Party congratulated the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) for leading the election results, internal discussions are ongoing regarding whether to join the PAM-led majority or move into the opposition. The party's National Council is scheduled to meet on Saturday, October 3, to make a final decision on government participation.
The party expressed satisfaction with its performance, particularly its success in the southern provinces, but raised concerns regarding the national voter turnout, which fell to approximately 38.08%. Additionally, the party noted irregularities during the electoral process, including allegations of financial influence, pressure on voters, and issues with the handling of voting records.
