Istituto Pappalardo ceiling collapse in Vittoria triggers investigation

A portion of a ceiling collapsed during a lesson at the Istituto Pappalardo in Vittoria, Ragusa, injuring two female students. While the injuries were not serious and the students received medical care, the incident has sparked intense debate regarding the safety and obsolescence of school infrastructure in Italy.

The Procura della Repubblica di Ragusa has opened an investigation against unknown parties to determine the causes of the collapse. Authorities have summoned the company responsible for previous renovation work on the building to assist in the inquiry. Following the incident, firefighters declared the affected areas unusable, and the mayor issued an ordinance closing the entire first floor of the building pending further inspections.

The event highlights broader concerns about the aging Italian school system. Data indicates that approximately half of the nation's school buildings date between 1950 and 1990, with only 10.5% being less than thirty years old. This incident follows a similar ceiling collapse at the same institute seven years ago.
