Istituto Santa Cecilia suspends nighttime nursing coverage

The Istituto Santa Cecilia in Civitavecchia has reportedly suspended nursing coverage during nighttime hours since August 5. Due to difficulties in recruiting nursing staff, approximately 80 residents, including individuals with disabilities and varying health needs, are currently being monitored overnight by socio-healthcare workers (OSS) instead.

While the professional competence of the OSS is not in question, families of the residents have expressed significant concern regarding the difference in clinical capabilities between OSS and registered nurses. Families worry that in the event of a sudden medical emergency or a sudden change in clinical status, the absence of a nurse could delay immediate medical assessment and intervention, as the OSS are only permitted to provide assistance within their specific professional scope and must activate emergency services for medical emergencies.
