Istria commemorates the 1943 Pazin Decisions
Istria County is commemorating the anniversary of the Pazin Decisions, also known as the Rujanske decisions, which were signed in September 1943. This historical event marked a turning point for the region following the capitulation of fascist Italy, as local representatives declared the unification of Istria, Rijeka, Zadar, and several islands with Croatia.
The decisions, made by the National Liberation Committee for Istria and later validated by ZAVNOH, served as a rejection of previous treaties that had ceded Croatian territories to Italy. These acts are viewed as the foundational values for the modern, open, and tolerant identity of the Istrian peninsula. The anniversary is marked by a ceremonial session in Pazin attended by regional political leaders and guests from across Croatia.
