Istria leverages gastronomy and tourism for regional development
The Istrian peninsula has developed a significant tourism and gastronomy-driven economy by integrating agriculture with high-quality culinary offerings. Over the past three decades, strategic development focused on “Green Istria,” utilizing investments in public infrastructure and farming incentives to prevent youth emigration and revitalize approximately 200 previously empty villages.
This approach has transformed the region into a year-round destination, with the area recording five million arrivals and over 30 million nights in the previous year. The landscape now features approximately 3,500 holiday villas and renovated houses, offering competitive pricing compared to coastal locations. The region's identity is characterized by a blend of historical influences and a strong connection to its natural and culinary heritage, such as its white truffles.
