Istria tourism shifts as last-minute bookings surge
Istria is experiencing a significant shift in tourism patterns during the peak summer season, with a surge in last-minute bookings. While hotels and campsites are nearing full capacity, many private apartments remain available as travelers increasingly wait until just days before arrival to secure accommodations.
Boris Žgomba, president of the Croatian Chamber of Economy’s Association of Travel Agencies, noted a dramatic change in booking behavior. Whereas last-minute bookings previously accounted for approximately 20% of remaining capacity, this year that figure has risen to roughly 80%. This trend is driven by travelers using the high volume of available options to compare prices and quality.
Lorena John, president of the Istria Family Accommodation Association, emphasized that private property owners must adapt to this trend. She suggested that providers should offer greater flexibility, such as shorter minimum stays and strategic discounts, to capture demand and prevent vacancies during the height of the season.
