Istria officials seek new waste management sites to replace Kaštijun

The Istria County Assembly and the Pula City Council held a joint session to address the ongoing waste management crisis at the Kaštijun landfill. Officials decided that the Istria County Spatial Planning Institute must propose potential locations for a new regional waste management center within six months. Crucially, the decision stipulates that any new location cannot involve expanding the current footprint of Kaštijun.

Pula Mayor Peđa Grbin noted that the construction of a new center could take up to ten years, meaning the region has a limited window to find alternatives before the current landfill reaches its capacity limits. Grbin also issued an apology to citizens for previous assurances regarding the facility's impact, acknowledging the negative effects on local life. He emphasized that while Pula does not oppose closing Kaštijun, the financial burden of the transition should not fall solely on Pula's citizens.

Civic groups, including Zeleni odred Pula-Medulin and Čist zrak, held protests to demand immediate action. Meanwhile, the political group Možemo! proposed urgent measures, including continuous monitoring of gas levels and leachate water, to prevent a public health and ecological crisis. They warned that current waste management practices fail to meet environmental standards required for 2035.
