István Gulyás to sue MTVA over dismissal from M5

István Gulyás, the former director of the M5 channel, has announced plans to launch a significant labor lawsuit against the Hungarian public media service, MTVA, following his dismissal.

Gulyás, who also hosted the program ‘Ez itt a kérdés’, disputes the grounds for his removal. While MTVA claims his dismissal resulted from an investigation into violations of new professional and ethical principles and failure to follow management instructions, Gulyás maintains he never received any formal, written warnings regarding his work. He argues that his broadcasts provided political science and historical analyses rather than partisan activity.

In a recent interview, Gulyás alleged that his removal was a rapid response to political pressure and censorship. He cited instances where content was scrutinized for specific terminology and claimed that the decision-making process lacked transparency. He has appointed lawyer András Schiffer to represent him in the upcoming legal proceedings.
