ITA Airways introduces Large Dog On Board cabin service for dogs up to 30 kg

Starting 3 August 2026, Italian Lufthansa subsidiary ITA Airways will allow large dogs to travel in the passenger cabin on selected domestic routes. The new “Large Dog On Board” service permits up to two dogs per flight – one weighing up to 30 kg in Business Class and a second up to 15 kg in Economy – without a transport crate. Passengers must book the service at least four days in advance, pay an additional fee, and ensure the animal is muzzled, leashed and placed on a designated floor carpet area beside the owner’s seat. The programme received approval from Italy’s civil aviation authority ENAC after a successful test flight between Milan Linate and Rome Fiumicino in February 2026. CEO Joerg Eberhart said the change responds to customer demand to keep pets with their owners during travel. ITA Airways plans to expand the offering gradually to more domestic routes and eventually to international flights, while providing seat‑change options for passengers with allergies or fear of dogs.
