Itaú Unibanco and GFT use AI to accelerate cloud migration

Itaú Unibanco and GFT Technologies have developed a collaborative solution using artificial intelligence to accelerate the migration of mainframe batch systems to the cloud. This initiative targets essential banking routines, such as settlements, closings, and reconciliations, which have historically been processed on traditional mainframe technology.

The framework utilizes the Batch2Cloud tool, developed jointly by GFT and the bank, integrated with Wynxx, GFT’s generative AI platform. Additionally, Zup Innovation contributed its Code Understanding solution to assist in reading legacy code. The process employs AI agents to handle repetitive tasks, analysis, and code generation/validation, while human specialists maintain control over technical decisions, architecture, and governance.

In its initial implementation phase, the model reportedly reduced migration timelines by up to 70% and increased delivery speeds by up to 3.3 times. This modernization effort is part of a broader cloud migration strategy initiated by Itaú Unibanco in 2018, aimed at increasing the bank's ability to launch new products and respond more rapidly to customer needs.
