Itaú Unibanco joins Brazil tokenization pilot with OpenAssets

Itaú Unibanco, Latin America’s largest private-sector bank, is joining an industry pilot to test the tokenization of fixed-income securities and investment funds in Brazil. Partnering with digital asset infrastructure provider OpenAssets, the bank will participate in a program led by the Brazilian Financial and Capital Markets Association (ANBIMA).

The pilot aims to evaluate the technical feasibility and practical requirements of using distributed ledger technology (DLT) for the issuance, trading, and settlement of traditional financial instruments. This includes testing how these assets can be integrated into existing institutional processes, focusing on operational aspects such as compliance, reconciliation, and system design.

This initiative follows Itaú’s previous involvement in the Central Bank of Brazil’s Drex project in 2023. The move signals a shift from experimental blockchain use toward the practical application of tokenized assets within the Brazilian financial ecosystem.
