Itabuna Mayor proposes VLT rail link between Itabuna and Ilhéus

The Mayor of Itabuna, Augusto Castro, is advocating for the implementation of a Light Rail Vehicle (VLT) system to connect the cities of Itabuna and Ilhéus in southern Bahia. The proposal, which emerged from discussions with the private sector, aims to address anticipated urban growth over the next eight to ten years.

A preliminary study suggests a rail line of approximately 23 kilometers. The project is intended to reduce travel times and facilitate the daily movement of passengers, potentially stimulating economic integration in sectors such as commerce, education, gastronomy, and services.

The proposed VLT would complement, rather than replace, existing road connections like BR-415 and BA-649. Realizing the project would require coordination between municipal, state, and federal governments, as well as private sector involvement.
