Brazil holds several supplementary elections following judicial rulings

Multiple municipalities in Brazil are holding supplementary elections this Sunday to fill mayoral vacancies resulting from judicial decisions regarding electoral irregularities or constitutional violations.

In Narandiba, voters are choosing a new mayor and vice-mayor after the previous administration, Danillo Carvalho dos Santos and Joana Rita Branco, had their mandates revoked. The Regional Electoral Court of São Paulo (TRE-SP) found evidence of economic power abuse and illegal vote solicitation, including direct payments to voters via Pix and the donation of construction materials.

In Santana do Itararé, Zé Izac (PT) has been elected mayor following a supplementary vote ordered by the Regional Electoral Court of Paraná (TRE-PR). The election was triggered by the removal of former mayor Élcio José Vidal and his deputy for illegal vote buying.

In Itaguaí, over 100,000 voters are participating in a supplementary election to select a leader to serve until December 2028. The vote follows the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and Superior Electoral Court (TSE) decisions to bar Rubem Vieira de Souza from office, as his candidacy was deemed a violation of the constitutional prohibition against third consecutive terms.
