Paraná River flooding triggers alerts across Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil
The Paraná River basin is experiencing significant flooding, prompting hydrological alerts and emergency measures across South America. In Argentina, the Chaco province has recorded over 2,200 evacuees as river levels in Barranqueras and Corrientes remain above evacuation thresholds. The National Institute of Water (INA) warns that while levels may decrease slightly in the short term, heavy rains in the upper basin could trigger new rises in the coming weeks.
In Paraguay, the Yacyretá Binational Entity has issued its 13th hydrological alert, noting that water volumes are significantly higher than historical averages. The river is maintaining high levels that threaten coastal populations and port operations. Experts note that the Yacyretá dam has limited capacity to regulate these extraordinary flows, acting largely as a run-of-the-river facility.
In Brazil, flooding has impacted infrastructure and local communities. The Uruguay River has exceeded flood levels in Uruguaiana, displacing hundreds of residents. In the state of Paraná, rising waters have caused traffic difficulties on the PR-510 highway and led to the closure of the pier in Porto Rico. Meanwhile, Itaipu Binacional reports that while the Iguaçu River's flow is expected to decrease, the management of the Paraná River remains a priority to balance energy generation and flood control.
