Itaipu Binacional regulates reservoir levels via spillway openings

Itaipu Binacional has been managing reservoir levels through controlled spillway gate openings following heavy rainfall in upstream basins. The most recent discharge occurred on Monday, September 28, lasting from 8:00 to 13:30 with a flow rate of approximately 700 m3/s.

Technical teams have been monitoring water volumes to maintain the reservoir within safety parameters, specifically aiming to stay near a reference maximum of 220.50 meters above sea level. This regulation process began on September 13 due to increased hydrological inflows. During recent operations, discharge rates through the spillway channels have reached up to 6,000 m3/s, depending on energy generation needs for Paraguay and Brazil.

While no further openings are currently scheduled for the immediate term, technical forecasts suggest the gates may reopen next weekend to continue managing water levels and downstream conditions.
