Itaipu Binacional spillway scheduled to reopen Thursday
The spillway at Itaipu Binacional is scheduled to reopen on Thursday, September 24, following a period of controlled water discharge. The operation was initiated as a safety measure due to increased reservoir volumes caused by rainfall in the incremental basin.
During the recent weekend, the spillway attracted 2,767 visitors to the Paraguayan side of the dam to witness the water discharge. Flow rates peaked at over 3,800 m³/s, with some discharges reaching up to 6,000 m³/s. The binational entity noted that the opening does not interfere with electricity generation for Brazil and Paraguay, as the maneuver is strictly for dam safety and technical water level management.
