Itaipu Biological Refuge cares for seized native bird eggs

The Bela Vista Biological Refuge (RBV), managed by Itaipu Binacional in Foz do Iguaçu, is providing care for native bird eggs and hatchlings seized by the Federal Revenue Service. The eggs were discovered on Saturday, October 24, being transported irregularly by a Chinese couple on a passenger bus traveling from the border region toward Rio de Janeiro.

Of the 34 eggs intercepted, seven belong to the Psittacidae family (such as parrots and macaws) and 27 belong to the Ramphastidae family (such as toucans and aracaris). As of Tuesday morning, 12 eggs have hatched, resulting in the birth of 10 Ramphastidae and two Psittacidae. Experts expect all remaining eggs to hatch by Friday.

The birds are being kept in an incubator that maintains ideal temperature and humidity. Once hatched, they are moved to an Animal Treatment Unit (UTA) for at least 40 days. Veterinary and zootechnical teams are providing specialized nutrition, including a custom protein-rich formula for the Ramphastidae and commercial formula for the Psittacidae.
