Itaipu Dam Light Show Ends for Year-Long LED Upgrade

The "Itaipu Iluminada" light show at the Itaipu Dam in Foz do Iguaçu will hold its final performance on Saturday, 8 May, before a technical pause of about one year. The pause allows the existing metal‑vapor lamp system, no longer produced, to be replaced with a fully digital LED setup while preserving the original design of 829 illumination points created by designer Peter Gasper.

The new LED system will enable colour and intensity changes from a control desk, eliminating manual lamp swaps and supporting more frequent shows—potentially four to five days a week after the upgrade. Since its inauguration in 2002, the attraction has drawn 486,041 visitors, with 13,536 attending in early 2026. Officials say the modernization should boost nighttime tourism options in Foz do Iguaçu, extending visitor stays in the city.
