Italia Nostra calls for removal of statue on Manfria coast

The regional vice president of Italia Nostra Sicilia, Professor Leandro Janni, has called for the removal of a Madonna statue placed on a rock along the Manfria coastline in Gela.

According to the organization, the installation—which includes a small solar panel—was reportedly carried out without the necessary authorizations from the Maritime State Property office, the Superintendency for Cultural and Environmental Heritage, or the Department of Territory and Environment. The area is subject to landscape constraints under the Code of Cultural Heritage and Landscape and is recognized as a Site of Community Importance (SIC) and a Special Protection Zone.
