Italian ACI advises against driving in flip‑flops
Engineer Luigi Di Matteo, technical coordinator for the Automobile Club d'Italia (ACI), explains that the current Italian road code does not prohibit driving while wearing flip‑flops, sandals or even barefoot. The earlier code, in force until 1993, required shoes suitable for driving.
Di Matteo recommends always wearing proper shoes because flip‑flops can slip off or become trapped under the pedals, creating a safety hazard. While police cannot issue a fine solely for wearing flip‑flops, insurers may argue the driver failed to observe safety norms after an accident, though proving this is difficult. The same safety advice applies to motorbike riders, who are also urged to protect their feet and knees while riding.
