Italian administrative courts halt waste depot and camper site projects

The regional administrative court (Tar) for Sicily suspended a mayoral ordinance that designated an unfit, confiscated building in Selinunte as a waste‑container depot. Residents argued the structure, owned by a front man for a mafia figure, lacked the necessary conditions for public hygiene, especially during summer, and cited anti‑mafia legislation requiring confiscated assets to serve institutional or social purposes. The court set a hearing for September 10 to further review the case.

In a separate ruling, the Tar upheld the municipality of Castelfidardo’s decision to keep a 2,447‑square‑meter forest area within the protected “Selva di Castelfidardo” site unchanged. A real‑estate developer’s appeal to convert the woodland into a camper‑parking and camping zone was rejected, with judges noting the increased land consumption and urban pressure such a change would cause in a protected environment. Legal costs were allocated between the parties.
