Italian agricultural cooperatives strengthen organic farming and seed autonomy
Small-scale agricultural producers in Italy are increasingly utilizing cooperative models to enhance market power and protect biodiversity. In the Marche region, the Terrabio cooperative supports over 120 organic farms. By managing the production process and coordinating planting schedules based on international contracts, the cooperative ensures stable supply chains and fair pricing for members who operate on the margins of large agricultural sectors.
In Piedmont, independent farmers are organizing through the Associazione Rurale Italiana to promote seed autonomy and local varieties. An upcoming event at the Polleri mill in Monastero Bormida focuses on the Furat wheat variety, which is noted for its climate resilience and minimal water requirements. These initiatives aim to provide alternatives to multinational seed corporations by establishing networks for seed exchange and shared production resources.
