Heat-driven crisis forces early grape harvests across Italy
A prolonged heatwave and severe drought are straining Italy's agricultural sector. Production of cereals fell, with wheat harvests down 6% year‑on‑year, while milk output dropped about 10% as livestock suffered from prolonged high temperatures. Prices paid to fruit growers have also collapsed, with pears, peaches, plums and apricots seeing price cuts of 17‑34% compared with the previous year.
The climate stress is accelerating the grape‑vine cycle. In Piedmont's Alta Langa DOCG the vendemmia began on 5 August, earlier than usual, and similar early harvests are reported in Veneto, Abruzzo, Puglia and the Bari‑BAT area. Growers cite healthy grapes but warn of lower yields and sharply higher irrigation and energy costs. Regional authorities are responding: Abruzzo has reduced the maximum permitted yield from 150 to 135 quintals per hectare and imposed administrative blocking of excess grapes; Umbria is establishing an IGT Umbria consortium to coordinate the wine sector; Valle d’Aosta’s Coldiretti chapter has urged the regional government to improve water‑management infrastructure.
Forests are also showing climate impacts, with mushroom production falling dramatically, signalling broader ecosystem stress. Industry bodies such as Coldiretti, Confagricoltura and regional consortia are calling for coordinated policy measures to sustain Italian agriculture under the changing climate.
