Italian Air Force leadership changes: new squadron commander and 36th Wing chief appointed

On 28 July 2026 the Italian Air Force carried out two senior leadership appointments. At the military airport "Antonio Ramirez" in Gioia del Colle, Colonel Michele Nasto took over command of the 36th Stormo Caccia from Colonel Antonino Massara in a ceremony attended by Air Division General Marco Lant and numerous military and civilian officials. The outgoing commander highlighted recent operational achievements, including the unit’s 60th anniversary and a successful NATO Tiger Meet in 2026.

The same day the Ministry of Defence announced that General Mauro Lunardi had been appointed commander of the Squadra Aerea, the Air Force’s primary operational command, after approval by the Council of Ministers. He succeeds General Silvano Frigerio and brings decades of flight, command and NATO‑related experience to the role. Both appointments aim to sustain the Air Force’s operational readiness and its contribution to national and alliance defence.
