Italian airports face pressure amid operational incidents and infrastructure concerns

Recent operational incidents and disruptions at major Italian airports have prompted calls for urgent infrastructure investment and regional planning.

At Naples Capodichino Airport, an incident involving a ground service vehicle used for Volotea aircraft has highlighted growing pressure on the facility. Gianpiero Zinzi, regional coordinator for the Lega in Campania, argued that the airport is facing structural limits due to its location in a densely urbanized area. He advocated for the development of the Grazzanise airport to create an integrated system that would alleviate pressure on Capodichino and support tourism growth.

Simultaneously, in Sicily, labor unions including Filt-Cgil, Fit-Cisl, Uiltrasporti Sicilia, and Ugl TA have raised alarms regarding the situation at Catania Airport. Following flight cancellations and diversions, unions criticized years of insufficient investment in personnel and infrastructure. They noted that diverting flights to other hubs, such as Palermo, places an unsustainable burden on workers and passengers. The unions are calling on the Sicilian Region to establish a technical committee to develop a regional plan for managing airport emergencies and improving interconnectedness.
