Italian Alpine Rescue Teams Handle Over 25 Mountain Emergencies This Summer

With the summer reopening of ski lifts in Alagna Valsesia, the Finance Police’s Alpine Rescue unit resumed operations across the high valleys of Valsesia and the Monte Rosa massif. Since early June the squads have completed about a dozen rescues, assisting hikers and mountaineers at elevations above 4,000 m, coordinating with the regional Alpine Rescue Corps, fire services and medical teams. The missions have resulted in ten successful extractions and two fatalities.

In the neighboring Trentino province, Alpine Rescue crews recorded more than fifteen incidents in a single day, ranging from overturned automobiles on mountain roads to injuries among hikers, bikers and an 80‑year‑old whose smartwatch‑detected distress prompted a rapid response. Helicopters were deployed in over ten of these cases to reach remote locations and transport the injured to hospitals. The combined efforts illustrate the high demand for specialized rescue resources in Italy’s alpine regions during the peak summer tourist season.
