Italian aquaculture sector secures adjusted compensation for shellfish mortality

The Italian aquaculture and shellfish sectors are facing significant economic and environmental challenges due to rising water temperatures, mucilage, and mass mortality of mussels and shellfish. In response to these crises, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry has adjusted the criteria for financial compensation under the PN FEAMPA 2021-2027 program.

Previously, compensation for market disruptions caused by international conflicts in the Middle East was to be calculated based on 2025 production levels. However, because extreme heat in 2024 led to massive die-offs, many companies had little to no product to sell in 2025. To prevent these businesses from being unfairly penalized, the Ministry has authorized the use of 2023 production levels as the reference parameter for calculating indemnities for affected shellfish farmers.

In the Emilia-Romagna region, specifically affecting the Ferrara coast, the Sacca di Goro, and the Po Delta, officials are raising concerns about the long-term sustainability of the sector. Beyond immediate mortality events and the proliferation of the blue crab, there are growing fears regarding future European Union funding. Concerns have been expressed that the 2028-2034 financial framework may reorganize resources in a way that reduces available funds for the fishing and aquaculture sectors.
