Italian authorities act on Bagnoli beach water problem and Romito asbestos waste dump
In Bagnoli, Naples, residents reported stagnant, foul‑smelling water on the beach where a thermal channel from Agnano meets the sea. Deputy Francesco Emilio Borrelli appealed to the regional environmental agency (ARPA) and the environmental police for urgent inspections, citing bradysism‑linked changes to the coastline and concerns over possible illegal discharges. He suggested a permanent underwater conduit to redirect the flow away from the shore.
Near the Romito cliff, environmental inspectors discovered two large polyethylene bags filled with asbestos‑containing material (eternit). The waste, classified as hazardous, was secured and reported to the municipal police, which opened a criminal investigation under waste‑management legislation. A specialised firm will remove the material.
Both incidents have prompted local authorities to launch investigations and remedial actions to protect public health and the marine environment.
