Italian authorities address rising banking fraud and impersonation scams
Authorities in Italy are addressing various forms of financial fraud targeting bank accounts through digital and psychological manipulation.
In Ravenna, the Financial Banking Ombudsman (ABF) ordered a bank to reimburse a customer after an unauthorized instant transfer of 1,100 euros was made while the account holder was asleep. The ABF ruled that the bank failed to meet security obligations regarding ‘strong authentication’ for the payment procedure, noting that the institution could not provide sufficient evidence of proper authentication.
In Mantova, the Postal Police charged six individuals following a scam that resulted in a loss of over 30,000 euros. The perpetrators used ‘spoofing’ techniques to make phone calls appear as though they were coming from official police offices. The group orchestrated a scheme where a fake bank fraud operator alerted the victim to suspicious activity, followed by a call from a person posing as a police officer. The victim was convinced to transfer funds to protect their savings, which were instead stolen by the group.
