Italian authorities crack down on electricity theft in Sicily
Law enforcement authorities in Italy have conducted operations to combat electricity theft and illegal power connections in Sicily.
In Partanna, Carabinieri arrested three individuals caught in the act of using illegal connections to the public grid. The suspects had tampered with their home electricity meters to bypass costs. The operation was carried out with the support of specialized energy supply company personnel and included members of the 12th Carabinieri Regiment of Palermo.
In Catania, specifically within the Villaggio Sant'Agata neighborhood, the State Police reported 10 individuals for aggravated electricity theft. Following investigations into widespread illegality, officers provided security for technical staff from a distribution company who inspected residential buildings. The inspections revealed mechanisms designed to provide zero-cost electricity for appliances through meter tampering and unauthorized grid connections. Technicians disconnected the illegal setups to restore safety and monitor future usage.
