Marche reconstruction probe leads to 8 arrests and 51 suspects

An extensive anti-mafia investigation, dubbed ‘Ricostruzione’, has uncovered criminal infiltration in the reconstruction efforts following the 2016 Marche earthquake. Coordinated by the Ancona District Anti-Mafia Directorate and conducted by the Guardia di Finanza, the probe has resulted in 8 arrests and 51 individuals under investigation.

The investigation targets corruption, tax fraud, and organized crime involvement in both private reconstruction projects and public tenders issued by the Marche Region, ERDIS Marche, and the University of Camerino. Authorities have seized assets exceeding 57 million euros and conducted over 50 searches across multiple Italian provinces, including Ancona, Macerata, Rome, and Naples.

Key figures identified include Enrico Crucianelli, president of the National Association of Building Constructors of Macerata, and Fabio Pistarelli, former chief of staff to the regional president. Investigators allege that an entrepreneur used shell companies to issue 8 million euros in false invoices, with funds reportedly being funneled to the ’ndrangheta and the Casalesi clan. In one specific branch of the probe, university officials are accused of accepting bribes such as skipass, fuel vouchers, and free home repairs to manipulate tender procedures.
