Italian authorities launch new urban security and community monitoring initiatives

Authorities in Italy are implementing new strategies to enhance urban security and community involvement. In Varese, the Prefecture has renewed the ‘Neighborhood Watch Project’ protocol for a third three-year term. This initiative aims to strengthen synergy between institutions, police forces, and the local community by encouraging citizens and business owners to report suspicious activities without engaging in vigilante actions.

The Varese protocol specifically expands to include the commercial sector and nightlife areas. Through collaboration with Confcommercio Ascom, shopkeepers act as street representatives to report micro-criminality and urban decay. Additionally, a separate agreement encourages public venue managers to improve lighting, video surveillance, and staff training to ensure safer public spaces during nighttime hours.

In Venice, the Prefecture and Iuav University have introduced ‘Campus Safe,’ a project focused on urban regeneration through specialized training. The initiative seeks to integrate academic knowledge with institutional expertise to design safer, more accessible, and livable urban environments. The program is aimed at graduates and public administration personnel to help anticipate future urban challenges and improve the perception of safety in cities.
