Italian authorities seize 600 kg of untraceable seafood in Trapani and impose €24 k fines in Sicily

During a joint operation on the night of 30 June–1 July, the Guardia di Finanza, the Port Captaincy and the Trapani municipal police seized about 600 kg of fish and shellfish lacking the required traceability documentation. The haul, including squid, shrimp, cuttlefish, sardines, swordfish and mussels, was declared unsuitable for human consumption and the operators were fined a total of €4,000.

A separate task‑force inspection in Catania and the Ognina district uncovered additional violations. Inspectors seized 15 kg and 17 kg of non‑traceable seafood from a restaurant and an entertainment venue, identified cases of illegal (black‑market) labor, and cited numerous hygiene and safety infractions. The combined administrative penalties amounted to roughly €24,000, covering fines for undocumented fish, labor violations and safety breaches.

The operations involved police, the regional forest service, labor inspectors, public health officials, veterinary services and municipal authorities, underscoring a coordinated effort to enforce Italy’s food‑safety and traceability regulations.
