Italian automotive market shifts toward long-term leasing and second-hand sales

The Italian automotive market is experiencing a significant shift in consumer behavior, with a growing preference for long-term leasing and second-hand vehicle purchases.

Data from UNRAE indicates that in 2025, over 1.1 million long-term leasing contracts were signed for cars and SUVs, representing a 16.1% increase compared to 2024. Private individual contracts rose by 19.1% annually. This trend suggests consumers are increasingly prioritizing predictable monthly costs and service inclusion over traditional vehicle ownership.

Simultaneously, the second-hand market is expanding. According to IPSOS Doxa for Subito, 2.1 used cars were sold for every new car in 2025, a 2.9% increase. While diesel remains the most common engine type at 32%, gasoline usage has declined to 22%, while hybrid and electric segments are gaining ground. The second-hand trend also offers environmental benefits; the sale of used goods and parts is estimated to save approximately 518,000 tons of CO2 annually.
