Italian bank account costs rise in 2026
Analysis of banking data from January to August 2026 reveals rising costs for current accounts in Italy, with a growing divide between traditional branch-based services and digital offerings.
Traditional accounts have seen increases in the Average Total Cost Indicator (ICC). For families, the ICC rose by 0.35%, while for retirees, it increased by 3.61%. Major institutions affected by these changes include UniCredit, BPER Banca, and Mediobanca Premier. Specifically, UniCredit has introduced fees for cash or check deposits at ATMs, previously a free service, now costing 2.95 euros per operation, and has increased the cost of standard SEPA transfers.
In contrast, digital banks are offering significant reductions for younger customers. Isybank’s IsyPrime account has reduced its ICC for the youth profile by approximately 79%, dropping from 150.70 to 31.90 euros. Similarly, ING has waived monthly fees for customers under 30 on its Arancio Più account.
Beyond transaction fees, the cost of using accounts in overdraft or credit facilities has also seen upward trends, impacting customers who operate beyond their available balance.
