Italian bank deposits reach 1,163 billion euros amid rising account costs
Italian households hold approximately 1,163 billion euros in bank deposits as of May 2026, according to data from the Bank of Italy and studies by Adusbef. While nominal deposits have grown significantly, the real increase in wealth is estimated at only 4.7% when accounting for a 23.6% inflation rate over the last decade.
Managing these accounts has become increasingly expensive. The average annual cost for a traditional current account has risen by 23% over the last ten years, increasing from 82.2 euros to 101.1 euros. When including the stamp duty, the average expenditure reaches 117.6 euros. This rise is primarily driven by variable expenses, such as transfers and payments, which grew by 34.2%, and specific costs for instructions, which surged by 62.6%.
Wealth distribution remains highly uneven across Italy. Lombardy holds roughly 20% of the nation's total deposits, with Milan accounting for 90.8 billion euros. In terms of per capita liquidity, Bolzano leads with approximately 30,400 euros per resident, followed by Milan and Piacenza. Conversely, Crotone reports the lowest average at 9,700 euros.
