Italian banking union negotiations stall over contract renewal
Negotiations for the renewal of the national contract for Italian bank employees, which expired on March 31, have reached a standstill. Lando Maria Sileoni, general secretary of the FABI union, stated that discussions have yet to address specific union demands, describing the current progress as “talking about nothing.”
A fourth meeting is scheduled to take place at the ABI headquarters in Rome. Sileoni expressed concern that the ABI union committee has not yet received a sufficient mandate to engage in concrete discussions. Key obstacles include economic demands, the costs of the union's platform, and uncertainty stemming from ongoing extraordinary operations and restructuring within the banking sector.
The union is seeking to protect the purchasing power of approximately 260,000 employees, as well as nearly 30,000 workers in cooperative credit banks whose contracts are expected to be influenced by the ABI outcome. Sileoni warned that continued delays amid inflation could lead to increased conflict and higher demands for wage adjustments to compensate for lost value.
